The Greater Western Consortium has five member health services: Ballarat Health Services, Melbourne Health, Northeast Health Wangaratta, Western Health, and Albury Wodonga Health.
Ballarat Health Services
Ballarat Health Service is the principal referral health service for a corridor of western Victoria stretching from the western fringe of Melbourne to the border with South Australia. Two campuses are involved in basic physician training: Ballarat Base Hospital is an acute hospital, while Queen Elizabeth Centre delivers subacute services. Ballarat is Victoria's third largest city with over 90,000 people, and is about one and a half hours away from Melbourne by road or regular train service. It is the home of grand Victorian buildings and relics from Victoria's colonial, gold rush past, and the gateway to the Grampians National Park. It’s also 80 minutes drive from the Bellarine beaches.
Melbourne Health
Melbourne Health has over 7,000 staff members and 1,000 beds across its campuses, two of which are involved in basic physician training. The Royal Melbourne Hospital City Campus is a major tertiary hospital, and part of the Parkville Precinct for teaching and research. The Royal Park Campus provides subacute services. In close proximity are Melbourne’s CBD and the Lygon Street restaurant and shopping district.
Northeast Health Wangaratta
Northeast Health Wangaratta is a 228-bed regional referral health service in the Rural City of Wangaratta, with a population of around 26,000 and approximately three hours away from Melbourne. The hinterland of Wangaratta includes Victoria's ski fields and snow plains, as well as some of the state's finest wineries and producers of gourmet foods.
Western Health
Western Health has over 4,000 staff members and serves over half a million residents in Melbourne's highly multicultural western suburbs, with three campuses involved in basic physician training. Western Hospital is a tertiary teaching and research hospital, while Sunshine Hospital is a major general hospital – each has approximately 300 beds. Williamstown Hospital is an 86-bed general hospital.
Albury Wodonga Health
Albury Wodonga Health (AWH) is located in the twin city of Albury-Wodonga and was established on 1 July 2009 from the integration of the Wodonga Regional Health Service and Albury Base Hospital. AWH is a Victorian public health service, established under the Health Services Act 1988 (Vic). AWH operates from the two existing sites, now known as Wodonga Campus (previously Wodonga Regional Health Service) and Albury Campus (previously Albury Base Hospital). Both campuses are involved in basic physician training
