Basic physician training in Ballarat Health Services

Ballarat Health Services is the major referral health service for a large region of rural Victoria extending from Bacchus Marsh to the border with South Australia.  It is accredited as a Level 2 training centre by the RACP and has hosted the RACP exam every year for the last 5 years.  BHS receives trainees on rotation from both Western Health and Melbourne Health, and employs it’s own trainees as well. BHS successfully took trainees through the College’s written and clinical exams in 2009, and boasts a 100% pass rate in the written and clinical exams.

In addition to ‘on the job' teaching by physicians, basic physician trainees can access the RACP lecture series by video conference at Ballarat Base Hospital (Dept of Internal Medicine).  In addition, Ballarat Health Services has a well-established training program, with training activities on most days at both unit and service level. It is hoped in future that some sessions of the Consortium tutorial program for the FRACP written examinations will be video conferenced from Western Hospital to Ballarat Base Hospital.  In addition, Ballarat Health Services has built an ‘in house' training program including weekly grand rounds and journal clubs, and fortnightly case presentations.  Clinical training is also provided on an ongoing basis. A number of BHS Physicians are college examiners, including on the National examination panel.

Rotations available in Ballarat for basic physician trainees include: General Medicine, Aged Care, Cardiology, Rehabilitation Medicine and Oncology. BHS hopes to add ICU rotations in future.
