ALBURY WODONGA HEALTH

Albury Wodonga Health – Wodonga Hospital is located in the twin city of Albury-Wodonga, on either side of the Murray River, which forms the boundary between the states of Victoria and New South Wales, where it intersects with the primary road and rail links between Melbourne and Sydney. Albury-Wodonga is close to attractions including the Murray River, Lake Hume, regional wineries, historic townships (eg Beechworth, Chiltern) and the ski-fields.

Albury-Wodonga is three and a half hours drive from central Melbourne, and with a population of 100,000 is one of the largest inland settlements in Australia. Accordingly, Wodonga has a major regional health service, accredited to be a Level 1 training site by the RACP.  Moreover, components of training and rostering for the basic physician trainees involve the coverage of both campuses of Albury Wodonga Health - Wodonga Hospital and Albury Hospital. This broadens the medical training offered, as both the region's Intensive Care Unit and major Emergency Department are located at Albury Hospital. Four basic physician trainees rotate from Western Health to Wodonga per term in General Medicine, and three rotating basic physician trainees from New South Wales staff Albury Hospital at any given time.

Although basic physician trainees are not rotated to Wodonga in the months immediately preceding their FRACP examinations, there is a strong emphasis on training in Wodonga Hospital.  In addition to ‘on the job' training by physicians, basic physician trainees have access to the RACP lecture series (by video conference) at Wodonga Hospital (Library). These are complemented by: medical Grand Rounds (in conjunction with Albury Hospital) and medical registrar tutorials - both of which occur on a weekly basis.

The Director of Physician Training in Wodonga Hospital is Dr Russell Auwardt. Email contact via This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .
