Northeast Health Wangaratta

Northeast Health Wangaratta (NHW) is a regional referral health service for a picturesque area of north-eastern Victoria encompassing ski resorts, historic goldmining towns, vineyards and gourmet food producers.  It is a secondment hospital under RACP guidelines.  For the 2007 clinical year, two basic physician trainees rotate from Melbourne Health to NHW per term and work in General Medicine.  The on-call roster is one-in-three, the third component being provided by the Sub-Acute Medicine resident. Five specialist Physicians attend NHW as Visiting Medical Officers and two interns complete the General Medicine team. NHW also provides services in Renal Dialysis, Oncology and Paediatrics, in addition to a raft of surgical disciplines.

While basic physician trainees are not rotated to Wangaratta in the months immediately preceding their FRACP examinations, training is an integral part of working at Northeast Health Wangaratta.  In addition to ‘on the job' teaching by physicians, basic physician trainees can access the RACP lecture series by video conference at Wangaratta (Board Room).  Training initiatives in 2007 include regular clinical tutorials and mannequin-based Advanced Life Support refresher courses, on demand, at the beginning of each term.

The Director of Physician Training of Northeast Health Wangaratta is Dr Phil MacLeish.
